Coach : Bruce Arena
Arena has carved out a reputation as the best coach in the United States' football history since taking over from Steve Sampson at the helm in 1998. The New Yorker can boast the most victories and best World Cup achievements, as well as taking them into the top 10 of FIFA's world rankings.
Key Players
Landon Donovan - Donovan is the poster-boy of the US national team and possesses flair and experience up front. A largely unsuccessful stint in Germany saw him return to the US where he continues to grab headlines in the media.
DaMarcus Beasley - One of the few Americans to play regularly in the Champions League, Beasley is becoming a regular fixture in Guus Hiddink's PSV side with his pace and wizardry on either flank. Sometimes goes missing in games, however.
Form Guide
Arena's side are now in a position to claim supremacy in their CONCACAF group, enjoying a real rivalry with Mexico. The two nations finished level at the top of their World Cup qualification group, with the USA winning 2-0 when the sides met in September.
Form Versus Countries In Group
The United States were grouped with both Italy and Czechoslovakia at Italia 90. However, they lost both matches as Italy dismissed them 2-0. The Czechs were more emphatic, romping to a 5-1 win.
Style Of Play
Arena's side play the ball on the floor and are certainly capable of holding their own technically. Sometimes their play can be rigid and inflexible but an increase in the number of talented players certainly makes them a threat.
Group Verdict
It is possible the Americans could just as easily finish bottom of the group as second to progress to the last 16. They do have the talent but whether their temperament is strong enough to see off both the Czech Republic and Ghana is questionable. |
