Coach : Kobi Kuhn
Kuhn did well to steer Switzerland to Euro 2004 and then through the play-offs recently to grab a place in Germany. Viewed as a wise old man in his homeland, he gets the best out of a limited pool of players.
Key Players
Vogel is the cornerstone of the Swiss midfield. Great leadership skills have earned him the captaincy role and he combines defensive work with the ability to carve out openings. Has a great work ethic and is happy tracking back to allow the likes of Hakan Yakin and Cabanas to go forward. Much rests on the shoulders of Frei, who alongside Vogel is considered the biggest name in the squad. Has netted some crucial goals, including a second-minute penalty in the play-off in Istanbul.
Form Guide
Switzerland managed to take two draws from two matches against France which helped them secure second place in Group Four. They required a play-off to get through, and their victory over Turkey was overshadowed by fighting at the whistle.
Form V Countries In Group
The last two results against Les Bleus bode well. The teams were also paired in Euro 2004 along with England and, when they met on that occasion, France comfortably won 3-1.
Style Of Play
There is plenty of flair in midfield with options provided by Vogel, Yakin and Wicky while Frei links up well from the front-line. Kuhn has also instilled a solid defensive ethos which provides an economical base upon which they build.
Group Verdict
Switzerland can realistically finish second to reach the last 16 in Germany. Togo are an unknown entity and it will be interesting to see if South Korea can repeat the performances they produced on home turf in 2002. |
