Coach : Raymond Domenech
Domenech took charge after Jacques Santini's departure following a disappointing Euro 2004 and unfortunately for the Lyon-born manager, coincided with the retirement of many of France's all-conquering squad. Les Bleus struggled without Lilian Thuram, Zinedine Zidane et al and looked like struggling to qualify. Their return helped Domenech secure his side's place in Germany.
Key Players
Makelele remains as crucial as ever for France as well as Chelsea. No other French player is capable of dictating a game and doing the 'dirty' work as well as the former Real Madrid man. Up front, Henry is another of the few guaranteed a place in the starting XI with his unbelievable skill, pace and goalscoring ability.
Form Guide
After a poor start, France qualified relatively comfortably from Group Four. However, they had to overcome poor results such as goalless draws with Israel, Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland before grinding out the points needed to finish top.
Form Versus Countries In Group
France were drawn with neighbours Switzerland in the qualifying stage and after a goalless draw in Saint-Denis, drew again 1-1 in Berne. It was the Swiss who had to go through the play-offs, though, where they overcame Turkey. France's early exit in 2002 meant they played only three games while Togo have never played in the World Cup before.
Style Of Play
Typically French despite the regular change in Coach which has seen Aime Jacquet, Roger Lemerre, Jacques Santini and Domenech all in charge at various times since 1998. A great footballing side sometimes lacking in solidity despite a wealth of experience.
Group Verdict
This should be a straight-forward task for France. However, 2002 was also supposed to be yet they crashed spectacularly as Denmark and Senegal went through. If all goes to plan, Switzerland and South Korea will battle it out for second place with France qualifying for the last 16 easily. |
