Coach : Guus Hiddink
One of the best coaches in the world, Dutchman Hiddink recently took over as Socceroos coach to oversee qualification over Uruguay in the play-off. Guided South Korea to fourth place in 2002 and did the same for Holland four years previously.
Key Players
Mark Viduka - On his day, Viduka can compete and impress against the very best. Strong and skilful, the former Leeds man is surprisingly mobile and possesses great flair.
Tim Cahill - The main creative force for Australia since breaking into the national team while still playing for Millwall. Excellent vision, dribbling skills and versatility, combined with an eye for goal, making him the Socceroos' best all-round player.
Form Guide
Australia have to navigate a tough qualification campaign. Every time they are forced to face a play-off despite topping their group. However, they produced a sterling performance to draw 1-1 with Uruguay over two legs before clinching it on a penalty shoot-out.
Form Versus Countries In Group
Australia have never met Brazil as the one time they did qualify - 1974 - they finished bottom of their group and went straight home. They met Japan in the Confederations Cup in 2001 but lost 1-0 in Yokohama.
Style Of Play
Australia do have quality but give the impression they will fall short. Viduka and Kewell are typical examples. Both immensely talented, neither have fulfilled their potential. Hiddink will have his side solid at the back while relying on the aforementioned duo plus Cahill to create a spark.
Group Verdict
Australia will not be content with just making an appearance. After spending so long battling to qualify they will want to put in a good performance. Brazil, Croatia and Japan have more World Cup experience but Hiddink has the pedigree to mastermind a real shock in Germany. |
